                                          Lois Gibbs

1978 - Lois Gibbs, a mother of a child attending the 99th Street School, read in a local newspaper that her son's school was built on top of a 20,000 ton toxic-chemical dump. Her seven year-old son was experiencing chronic illness. She approached the school board, who ignored her physician's diagnoses and concerns for all children attending this school. In frustration, she  organized the Love Canal Homeowners Association.
