1953 - Hooker Chemical Company sold its sixteen acres of Love Canal land for one dollar to the Niagara Falls Board of Education with a carefully-worded disclaimer stating, The Hooker Chemical Company disclaims any responsibility for side-effects arising from any form of chemical exposure.
The Board of Education, in urgent need of more classroom space, purchased the land, constructed and new elementary school housing 400 children. It remained open from 1954, to August 2, 1978.
